Where All Shoes Go

January 28, 2013 · Leave a Comment

ols2I love shoes. Maybe it’s a Cindrella thing, you know how one shoe can change your life.   Well, maybe, anyway I don’ know how many pairs of shoes I have, and I don’t want to know.  Does anyone really care how many shoes someone has?   All I know is that they  are in every closet of my house, some are in the hall, others in my car in the trunk.  I also leave slippers at my daughters house.    When I get a little tired of my shoes, I put them in my bag and carry them off to their  last stop, my job, right into my shoe bucket under my desk.

ols1Everyday I wear boots or sneakers to work and change into a pair of shoes from my bucket.  Sometime, changing shoes again after lunch.  Then when I really get tired of them they go into the trash. See Ya’.  We are 6 women at work and each of us has a bucket full of shoes under the desk.  The men we work with just don’t get it. :)

My Desk – A Home Away From Home

February 21, 2012 · 1 Comment

I  have been blest with my job since 1988.  Then I was a young, divorced mom with  a darling daughter.  I work 5 days a week, averaging about 45 hours a week away from home.  I’ve been working here forever,  lots of things have happened since – I am now again divorced and a grandmother of  a little miss and a little mister. My daughter and her family came over yesterday for lunch and a visit…..a great way to spend a day off.  My desk is my little world  -a home away from home and in it I have everything I think I might need and some things that I just love to have around. Another time I’ll show you my shoe collection!!

Air Care With Houseplants

February 1, 2012 · Leave a Comment

Yes, there are toxins in the air around us, but there’s a simple way to cut down on them — without a HEPA filter. According to the Wall Street Journal, “a growing body of global research is showing plants can reduce dust particles and contaminants, such as formaldehyde and benzene, that come from cigarette smoke, paint, furniture, building materials, and other sources.” What’s more, a recent study cited in the London Daily Mail found that potted plants in offices reduced fatigue, stress, dry throats, headaches, coughs, and dry skin among workers. Which plants are best for keeping you healthy? Here are a few good ones for both desks and bigger spaces — culled from the Wall Street Journal and easywaystogogreen.com

1. Mother-in-Law’s Tongue – my favorite
Hardy with tall, blade-shaped leaves, it can tolerate low light and will survive irregular watering. Perfect for black-thumbed couch-potatoes.

2. Peace Lily

An attractive option with a tropical look, it may droop in bright sun. It’s mildly toxic when ingested, so avoid it if you have curious pets or toddlers.

3. Janet Craig

Glossy, deep green foliage makes this bushy plant particularly appealing. Look for species from Hawaii, and don’t be tempted to overwater, which can cause leaves to develop brown and yellow spots.

4. Spider Plant

An easy hanging plant to grow and maintain, this species is named for its long, thin leaves that resemble spider legs. Poisonous to cats.

5. Fig Tree

The ficus tree can survive for years. Keep it out of direct sunlight and cold drafts, water it, and mist its leaves. Repot every other year.

6. Rubber Tree

A spot near a sheer-curtained window with bright, indirect sunlight is ideal for this popular plant. Keep it moist in the growing season.

7. Boston Fern

For maximum impact, set this long-fronded plant on a pedestal or in a hanging basket in bright, indirect sunlight.

Large folliage surfaces produce the most oxygen. Grow some fresh air.

Stay Healthy On The Job

August 29, 2011 · 1 Comment

According to a article from Allyou,  simple stategies to combat three common workplace wellness hazards.

You Sit Or Stand Too Much………Walk three minutes every hour.  If you’re standing, rest one foot then the other on a stool to relax your back, or use a cushioned floor mat.  I stand alot at work and having  these cushioned mats really help.

You Don’t Get Enough Fresh Air……..On your break, go to an area with the least polluted air (like a park) or the top floor or roof of your building (gravity keeps pollutants low to the ground).  Consider buying an inexpensive portable air filter.  After I eat my lunch, I try to get outside for at least 10-15 minutes – usually leaning on a parked car, talk about the family or whatever.  Sometimes we take a walk to the dry cleaner or just around the block  for some exercise.

You Are Feeling Burned-Out..….Focus on the present rather than worrying about the past or the future.  When things go right, credit your efforts, not luck, and view tough situations as challenges, not problems.  I try to do the most I can, the best I can and not lose my joy or peace and stay in the moment ,  not saying its  easy, or that it always works…….but I try.  Then play $1.00 lotto twice a week.
