Grandma’s Little Helper

April 30, 2012 · Leave a Comment

It is always a joyous thing when your grandchildren help you with chores…On this day my granddaughter decided that she wanted to help me clean up the front yard…Really, I thought, let’s see how much she will be willing to do…cleaning up the front yard, after the long winter sleep is not easy, but OK Sophie help grandma get started. The first tedious thing we need to do is get those pesky leaves off the ground…Wow, Grandma, this is alot of leaves…

Yes, Sophie a lot of leaves.  Unfortuantely theywill not just  jump into the bin, we need to bend and pick the leaves and place those dead leaves in the bin…this is the  back breaking part of the job….up down, down up…Oh my aching back…

Sophie really took the leave job very seriously.  All she wanted was to get them  into the bin..but they seemed to never end…Grandma, she says,  will these leaves every be all picked up?   I put them in the bin, and I think they are jumping out and going back on to the floor… are they still alive?

Look Grandma, I found that if I use my foot the leaves stay in the bin…and we can put more in…stuff those leaves down, Sophie.

Not quit finished but getting there…accomplishing a job and doing it well is always satisfying.   Of course Sophie we do have a lot more to do, but now we can take a break and relax awhile, for when a job is well done we can feel like we have done a great job…thanks darling, Sophia, you certainly were a great little helper…

Lychee-Mint Spritzers – Derby Ready

April 27, 2012 · Leave a Comment

Every year I  watch the Kentucky Derby on tv. I will watch the show leading up to the race , enjoy looking at the surroundings, the fashion and the jockeys and  horses.   Each one so beautiful in their own right – good clean fun in the comfort of my living room.  This year while noshing on some goodies,  I will be trying a new cocktail drink  , something light , a spritzer.

Lychee-Mint Spritzer – serves 2

Muddle 8 mint leaves with 2 teaspoons sugar in a cocktail shaker. Add 4 canned lychees, 1/4 cup syrup from the can, 3 ounces vodka and a squeeze of lime juice; shake with ice. Strain into 2 ice-filled glasses; top with seltzer. Repeat to make more drinks. Garnish with mint and lime.

For My Children: A Mother's Journal of Memories, Wishes and Wisdom“Memories light the corners of my mind”.

Do memories light the corners of your mind?  Not my mind.

Memories tend to get filed away in some dark corner of my mind.  The funny thing is when you see, read, or just smell something it triggers the memory just like that.  SNAP!

So when I came across this journal, My Children: A Mother’s Journal of Memories, Wishes and Wisdom.   I thought what a great thing to have.

Memories are something special…it’s the memories that we create in the course of our lives that keep us smiling, or crying.  Good or bad a memory can be forgotten….but memories can stay intact when you record them in a journal that you can look through and light up the corners of your mind.  The best is this is a journal that your children, grandchildren and maybe even your great grandchildren can review with you.

My Children: A Mother’s Journal of Memories, Wishes, and Wisdom is a beautifully designed and illustrated book with creative prompts that will spark mom’s recolletions of fun family vacations, favorite games, an speciel holday traditions.

This collection of fill-in-the-blank lists, questions, and querieis is the easiest way for any mother to record on paper answers to the questions her children never thought to ask but will love to discover, such as:

What is some of the craziest parenting advice you ever received?

What have been yoru favorite parts of being a mother?

In what way are your  children like you?

If life had a rewind button, what moments would you want  to relive?

For my Children is a way to chronicle a mother’s history, record stories and memories that might otherwise be forgotten…

So this Mother’s Day you can help mom relive her most cherished and unforgettable moments of motherhood…give her the gift of memories.

Portion Size Me – A Kid Driven Plan to a Healthier Family

April 25, 2012 · Leave a Comment

I’d like you to meet Marshall Reid, now a sixth grader, who excels in his communication skills. His hobbies include cooking, Tae Kown Do, playing football. canoeing and most importantly, playing game on his Playstation. This wonderful book was inspired by 10 year old Marshall, who was fed up with being overweight and misrable.  Marshall, with the help of his mom and family, decided to redifine his life by making choices based on “portion size me”  instead of the commerical driven  ”super-size me“. Bravo, Marshall!!   No strict diets.  just a workable lifestyle for the entire family, and it can become a lifestyle for your family too.

This is a lovely and easy book to read  and through an assortment of tips and personal anecdotes, Portion Size Me brings children and their families together to make conscious decisions about what they put into their bodies. Alexandra (Mom) and Marshall developed a fun-filled project with six achievable goals to help create positive, long-lasting, healthy behaviors, including:

·         Eat as many real foods as possible

·         Read ingredients

·         Pause before you eat

·         Get moving

·         Help out in the kitchen

·         Watch portion sizes

With easy-to-follow, adaptable recipes and kid-friendly tips, your child will be eager to take charge in the kitchen, and in life as well.
