Hay Fever – What To Eat And Not To Eat For Relief

hayfever

Did you know that some foods can make allegies worse and some can help relieve them?  Here is a few found in Food Digest (Readers Digest) :

Foods that can harm:

hayfever1

Fermented Foods: Could harbor strains of mold spores. Raisins, beer, wine, sourdough bread, blue cheese, pickles and vinegar.

Honey

Honey: The sweet stuff can have microscopic amounts of the allergen pollen mixed in.

hayfever3

Sunflower Family:  Tarragon, artichokes, endive and chamonile tea may contain ragweed relatives.

Foods that can heal:

hayfever4

Salmon & herring: Reports show that eating omega 3fatty acids can help soothe symptoms.

hayfever5

Flaxseeds: These seeds are packed with omega-3. Don’t eat them whole.  The body can only absorb their fatty acids when the seeds are ground. Look for Flaxseed Meal.

hayfever6

Tumeric: The prime ingredient in this Indian spice, curcurmin, has a natural anthistamine effect.  Stir into soups, egg dishes and curries.

Cucumber Water – COOL

cucumber

Summer is just around the corner. Hooray!  And when it is hot and super humid a nice cool drink is always welcome.  In the summer I do  drink a lot of water.  Actually, I drink water all year round, but in the summer I drink more than my usual amount.  Gulp! Gulp!

However, drinking plain water can get a bit BORING.  I do like to squeeze some lemon in my water, just to get a citrus flavor, and also helps boost my vitamin C, but after awhile water with lemon can also get tiring, really quick.

By chance I came across this really cool idea, at least I thought it was cool, it sure did sound cool, it was water with cucumber…come on now don’t you think that sounds cool…cucumbers are always referred to as being cool, COOL AS A CUCUMBER!

So now I am excited that I have a great COOL summer drink…Cool-as-a-Cucumber Water.  You have got to try it…If you like cucumbers, and water, then you will love cucumber water.

Here is the simple recipe:

1/2 Cucumber, thinly sliced

3-4 cups water, lemons, also thinly sliced, don’t forget to discard the ends.

10 small leaves of Fresh Basil, torn in pieces, and  ice.

Combine ingredients in infuser basket.  Pour in water and let steep in fridge for a minimum of 1 hour.

Serve over ice, garnish with the lemon, cucumber, and fresh basil…

Now does that not just sound cool?

Yes summer is around the corner. You can bet that cucumber water will be a staple in my fridge.

Easy Chicken Biscuits

chcikenbiscuits

My grandkids want me to bake whenever I babysit.. Cupcakes or pizza or something, really anything!  The idea is “Lets Make A Mess”.  Here is a simple and quick chicken biscuit I made with left over chicken and the things I found in my daughters’ refrigerator.

Easy Chicken Biscuits

Pillsbury Refrigerator Biscuits
1 cut-up Grilled Chicken Cutlet – leftover
1 TB minced onion/celery/carrot mix – I used a little because of the kids
1/2 Cup Mango Salsa – because that’s what I found
1/2 Cup shredded cheese

Oven 400 – Place biscuits in cupcake pan – press to form.  Mix the chicken with the rest of the ingredients and let the kids fill biscuits.  Bake 20 minutes or until brown (you know your oven).

Kids will eat what they help you cook.  You just have to clean up.

The Lion King Roars!

Disney on Broadway may not seem special to some but it ended up being special to me.  Going to the play was special because we went with the grand kids, my parents, my son and daughter-in-law, but I truly did not think that I would really end up enjoying the story that I have seen so many times on TV.

I mean when my daughter was little she had the Lion King tape. A VCR tape.  OMG! Is that how old this story is?  Where does time go?   Is that not the million dollar question… 🙂Lion King 026

We decided to go see the Lion King for my grandson Christian, he loves the Lion King story.  Now Sophie not so much, but she was happy to be going to see a play on Broadway.  Like she knows what Broadway is, LOL!  Now my mom, she was also happy as a lark, she loves hanging out in the city.

Lion King 030

The city!  Look at the busy Broadway street.  I tell you Broadway was so lite up that the night looked like day.

.  Lion King 034I have to admit it was a big chance taking Christian, an almost 3 year old, to see this play.  My lovely husband just kept reminding us that the play was 2 and half hours long with a 15 minute intermission.   Would Christian sit for the whole entire play?  I mean the tickets were not exactly discounted for him, or my granddaughter, and the show we went to see started at 8 pm.   What were we thinking?

Lion King 035To our delight Christian sat and watched the whole play in awe, without any incident.  No, there was one incident.  When his sister decided that Christian did not need to be holding the playbook.  She sweetly knocks it out of his hand and the book drops behind the chair of the people sitting right below them.   Now Christian begins to roar.  I thought this is it, we will now have to leave the theater.  They will throw us out for sure. We had to handle the situation quickly, so his daddy grabbed another play book and pretended to retrieve the book that was knocked behind the chair. To our surprise, Christian calmly took the book and returned to his mother’s lap.  Just in time, the lights went out, and intermission was over.

Lion King 033It was a great experience bringing the children to see a real Broadway play. We all enjoyed the beautiful costumes, the songs, the dance, and it did not matter where you sat, the stage was easily seen even from the top rows…see that is were we sat, the top rows (I don’t have to tell you why we sat there)

If you have not yet seen the Lion King, on Broadway, you are certainly missing out on a Broadway spectacular.

We all gave the play  5 ROARS!

PS –  It really deserved 10 ROARS, but that is too much roaring for me.
