Happy New Year!

April Fools!! Did you know that April Fool’s Day was the original New Year’s Day celebration. Ancient cultures, which included the Romans, celebrated the new year on the first of April. This date followed the vernal equinox ( SPRING). Makes sense to me. Spring is like an awakening. Winter months makes us stale and sour, we are locked up like prisoners in our own homes. Then the earth finds itself closer to the sun. What  joy, an awakening occurs. The earth is suddenly alive again. Sounds like a new year to me.
This all changed “in 1582, Pope Gregory XIII ordered a new calendar (the Gregorian Calendar) to replace the old Julian Calendar. The new calendar called for New Year’s Day to be celebrated Jan. 1. That year, France adopted the reformed calendar and shifted New Year’s day to Jan. 1. According to a popular explanation, many people either refused to accept the new date, or did not learn about it, and continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1. Other people began to make fun of these traditionalists, sending them on “fool’s errands” or trying to trick them into believing something false. Eventually, the practice spread throughout Europe.’

At least this is one explanation of April Fools day. But, whatever the explanation April 1st is the official day of pranks for the Western world. Should you be the fool on April 1st remember laughter is the best medicine.

“The first of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year.” — Mark Twain
