A Tree Grows in Franklin Square

My mother has these pots sitting on top of a wall in front of our home.  These pots have been sitting on the wall for at least 20 years.  She sometimes would put plants in them, since they are pots for plants, but most of the time she would live them empty.  I would always get annoyed because they just look so silly sitting on top of the wall without a plant.  I mean why would you want a planter without a plant?  Makes no sense to me.

Then one day I noticed a green thing just sticking out of the pot.  At first I thought that some green stick was put in the pot.   I ignored it.  At least I tried to ignore it, until I began to notice that this green stick was now sprouting arms and getting bigger.  What the heck?  What was this green stick doing, was it actually getting bigger?  So I decide to take a closer look.  You know not just a quick glance with the eye.  I decided to get face to pot so I could determine what was happening inside the pot.  Sticks don’t grow! Was I surprised when I realized that the  stick was not a  stick at all.   I could not believe my eyes, it was a tree that was growing in this little pot.  I was so happy.  A real live tree just sprouting out on its own.   This was so amazing…so amazing I thought.

If I am correct I would say that this little potted tree  is an Evergreen.

I think this tree was a gift from our neighborhood birds.  I mean how else could the tree have taken root.  Some bird must have dropped a  tiny seed in just the right place and the seed took root.

Now I watch it, the tree, everyday, I like to watch it grow.   One day I will have to remove the tree from the pot and place it in the ground so that it can grow bigger.  However, I am afraid, I am afraid that if I take the tree out of its first home that this tree will not survive the transfer.  Maybe it might be best just to leave it in the pot and when the tree  gets big it will be so tall and strong that it will break free from the confined small space, and I will have no choice but to plant it in the ground.  Yes, I think that is exactly what I will do…the tree grow in the pot on its own, then the tree should make the final decision to leave the pot on its own…problem solved…:)
