Rocking Plymouth

Our yearly trip with Bobbiann and Carmine took us on a journey to Plymouth,MA. We were looking forward to seeing the famous Plymouth Rock and The Mayflower.

When we arrived we were awed by the beauty of the coast. We tried to imagine what it would have been like back in the 1600’s as the Mayflower coasted into what is now known as Plymouth, MA.

Looking out at this coastal view and trying to erase the present to imagine the past was easy to do.

Now due to Covid a lot of the indoor museums were closed. However, the history of Plymouth was displayed in other ways such as the Pilgrim Mother Statue The statue was a gift from the Daughters of the American Revolution for the 1921 Tercentenary Celebration. This statue was to honor the women who came across on the Mayflower and perished in the first winter in Pawtuxet.

Then off to Plimoth Plantation, we got to see history of the Plymouth Colony from the perspective of both the Pilgrims and the Native Wampanoag people. As we walked into the living quarters (tent) that would have housed Wampanoag people it gave us a sense of reality.

Yes, masks needed to be worn inside and outside. Have to say it was pretty hard wearing mask in the heat of the sun. But that was the rule we had to follow.

.

The village had replicas of the Pilgrims homes. The path of the village ran straight down to the sea. The view, I suspect, was not too admire the waters but to see the landing of ships that would have come with supplies and more people.

What was slightly disappointing was the size of the infamous Plymouth Rock.

The rock is dated 1620 but there is no historical evidence to confirm Plymouth Rock as the Pilgrims’ actual steppingstone to the New World.

Our yearly trip, when we can do it, centers around American history. A history that we know so little about and need to know more of.

As the day winds down we gather to dine together, as the pilgrims did, but in so much more comfort.

Oh, as for seeing The Mayflower. To our disappointment the replica was taken to Mystic, Conn for repairs. 🙁
