I am not a bacon lover. I went most of my life rejecting this processed fatty meat. I did do some cooking with it, for flavor of course, but always removed it and gave it to my husband or children to eat. See they were bacon lovers.
Then I come across this interesting piece called, “The 5 facts about bacon”
Fact 1 – Bacon is addictive. Bacon contains 6 types of umami, which produces an addictive chemical response. Now this explains why my family is bacon wrapped.
Fact 2 – Bacon is the oldest processed meat. How old is oldest? Chinese were preserving and salting pork bellies as far back as 1500 BC. That’s BC, like Before Christ…Holy Moly!
Fact 3 – Bacon contains micronutrient called Choline. Choline has been linked to helping fetal brain development. This fact was the most amazing fact about bacon. Would you have ever considered that bacon would be a benefit to fetal development? Crazy! Sure wish I would have know this when I was having my kids. I might have ended up being a bacon eating like the rest of my family.
Fact 4- Over 2 BILLION pounds of bacon is sold in the US every year. Now that is a lot of bacon.
Fact 5 -It was Oscar Mayer who introduced the first packaged, sliced bacon that we now buy. Thank you, Mr. Mayer.
I have decided to rethink my stance on bacon. It’s time to be less judgmental about this processed meat.
I just may give bacon a chance the next time I go out for breakfast. Bacon and eggs! Now that is going to be a real first for me.
