Happy Thanksgiving!
Ever wonder what the first Thanksgiving was like?
I can bet that no one complained about being with the relatives, or the traffic they will have to endure to get to Grandma’s, or argue about who is going to do the cooking, or just plain argue about anything.
You know the FAMILY way.
The pilgrims were probable just happy to be on dry land and a land were they could worship freely. Their objection to the King of England and his, my religion or no religion attitude (like off with your head) , caused them to sail away from their homeland and anchor themselves to a land were if they argued they surely had good reason to do so.
Yes, they were happy that all the kings horses and all the kings men were now far, far away and could no longer inflict punishment on them.
With Bible in hand the pilgrims surely had a lot of reasons to give thanks on that first day of thanks, in 1621. I mean those that made it, out of the 102 that traveled on the Mayflower only 53 pilgrims gave thanks on that first day of thanks. Survival of the fittest.
Oh, let’s not forget the Wampanoag Indians , they too, shared in this thankful day, and they also helped, you know sharing information like telling the pilgrims all about corn.
CORN an essential food source.
It was not until the Civil War broke that Abraham Lincoln made an official declaration regarding Thanksgiving Day, Mr. Lincoln proclaimed the month of November the official day of celebration for Thanksgiving.
Before then Thanksgiving was randomly celebrated across America.
I do believe that giving thanks is something we need to do every day.
However, on this one day a year, we need to remember and give thanks to the pilgrims, who endured unimaginable hardships to travel to a land thousand of miles away, and still were able to get down on their knees and praise God for their new found freedom.
Let us all give thanks, let us all get down on our knees and raise our head to heaven to give thanks today and everyday for the blessings bestowed on us inspite of the hardships that are thrown at us.
Our special thanks goes to our Military men and women, both past and present.
If not for their courage and sacrifice we would not be here to celebrate this awesome day.
(Or, sit in front of my TV and watch the Macy’s Day Parade.)
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!
