Mother’s Day 2011

What can I say about Mother’s Day 2011.

I guess I can say,” Thank you, Lord.”

Mother’s day for me is not a restful one. When I am asked, “What are you doing for mother’s day?” My answer is, “I have to cook.”

Yes, I cook. Most mother’s take a day off from cooking, not me. Restaurants do a lot of business on Mother’s day, it is their busiest day of the year.   We used to go out for dinner, long time ago, but it started to get to expensive as the family grew, and never mind the whirlwind of  chaos that we brought with  us.

On this  mother’s day, we spent the afternoon outside.  Drinks and appetizers out on the grass.  The kids had room to play and we all just enjoyed the cloudless day, and the sun sending its warmth on our wintered bodies.

I must confess, I am not the only cook of the day, my mother helps with the preparations, as well.

Let me say a few words about my mother and Liz’s mother.  They left their mother’s to migrate to America, in 1952.  My mother was 17 at the time.  She left her family and came to a new country with a baby that was only a few months old, that would be me.  Not a word of English did my mom speak.  What kind of strength does it take to  leave your family?  What kind of courage does it take?  They sailed  to a land that was alien to them, as they were alien to it.  I am sure their hearts panged for their mother everyday.  No mother to turn to for support, no mother to cry to when the world hurt you.  No relief from the crying children that had no grandmother, as well.  Now, 58 years later, they have created a new family, their own little  nest.  They made this land their land and look toward the future.

This is why I truly appreciate Mother’s Day.  I have my mother and my children have their grandmother.  This is a blessing that cannot go un-thanked.

Here are a few facts that I have learned as a mother:  they are a pillar of strength, they are the glue that keeps  families together, and they are bridges for peace between brothers and sisters.

God bless mothers.

Oh, one more thing, you know your mother may  not be the mother you would have chosen,  but remember no matter how hard we try in the end we end up just like our mother.  I am reminded of that from my children.

I have also come to a realization… God created woman last  because God knew that the rest of creation would need a solid rock for support…

Butch Bakery

Have you heard about Butch Bakery?

Butch’s  Bakery bakes their cupcakes  with a masculine flare, this ain’t your school girl cupcake.

The  creator, David Arrick, made a decision to give cupcakes a more butch approach, according to David this is “Where butch meets buttercream.”

David took our everyday cupcake and turned it into a delicious statement.  He has christened his cupcakes: Beer Run, Home Run, Mojito, Jackhammer, Big Papi.

Don’t they  looked good?  But d0 they taste good?  Yes, most definitely.  Groovinmoms had the opportunity to pop one of these “Macho cup cakes ”  into our not so macho mouths.  I am sorry, did I say we had one. Not.  After popping one of  these  little guys, we had to  pop a couple more,  if  I had some coffee I could have popped the whole table of cakes.

Cup cakes are not the only thing Butch’s Bakery makes. They do quiches, too.  OMG!  A bite into Butch’s quiche awakened my memory bank, and I recalled the last time I had a crust like this was when I went to  France .  http://images.businessweek.com/mz/10/51/370/1051_mz_94etcnextlife.jpg

I guess real men don’t eat quiche, they  bake it.  That is fine by me, keep on baking, David.

Butch  Bakery has been featured on Rachael Ray, Business week, NY Post, and Irish Times.

David, love the little hats on the cupcakes.

Getting Gorgeous with Degree – 15 Minutes Outside

Here is a great book with 365 ways to get out of the house and connect with your kids or grandkids!! So, come on, get out of the house – it is good for your kids – and your family.

As simple as having a morning picnic, watch the clouds race, give the dog a bath, this book, Fifteen Minutes Outside,  is full of fun, creative ideas for all seasons.

Let outside lifestyle expert, Rebecca P. Cohen begin or enhance your enjoyment of the great outdoors.  You will be surprised at the powerful and fun effect it can have on a family.  This is a rich and entertaining book of ideas!

For me, it was a book of memories – growing up my sister and I would always play outside – all the kids were out there, it was so much fun.  Jumping rope, skating around the block, drawing on the sidewalk with chalk and playing ball, swimming at the city pool, snow ball fight!   Mom really did know best – go out and play.

You are going to love this book.
