The B on your Thumb by Colette Hiller and Tor Freeman

The B On Your Thumb a book of 60 poems to boost reading and spelling. A hilariously collection of rhymes to help children ages 5+ learn how to read and spell. Wonderful anthropormophic and unforgettable letter-characters from Tor Freeman will delight children and provide an aid for those who struggle with learning these rules. The B On Your Thumb could become the book every family has on their bookshelf. Each poem teaches a specific sound, spelling, or rule. Using rhythm and wordplay, they promote phonics awareness, thinking skill, and literacy. But most of all, this book delights young readers with the fun and silliness of the English language.

An introduction instructs grown-ups how to use the book and extensive activities at the end allow children to build on their learning. Grouped into three categories the poems include:

  • See with a Two Ees
  • The Story of Q and U
  • The Rain in the Train
  • Ridiculous Ph
  • Enough of Uff
  • Certainly a C
  • The Most ImportANT

Here is a a book where words like to play, where letters get cross when they don’t get their way. There are sounds to make and jokes to uncover. An owl in your bowl, for you to discover. You’ll find out about how Q met U, and when to write to, two , or too. There’s a K on your knee, who’s ready for fun, and don’t be alarmed by the B on your thumb!

Where Did Nicky Go? by Lucy Geddes

Retired elementary teacher and author, Lucy Geddes has released a new children’s book Where Did Nicky Go? that introduces children to the universal scenario of losing a loved one, in this case, the loss of a family pet which demonstrates how to cope with loss and grief. Geddes gently approaches the delicate subject of death and imparts a valuable message for young readers to learn from as it tells the story of a boy and his experience dealing with grief for the first time after his beloved dog, Nicky, passes away.

Having been a teacher for 33 years as well as a parent and grandmother, Geddes knows firsthand the loss of a pet or loved one can be difficult for children to comprehend. She hopes her book will assist parents in helping their children understand the meaning of grief, cope with difficult times and navigate the healing process which is much needed during these times of uncertainty.

I will meet you at the Rainbow Bridge.
