Family, Time of the Season

Labor Day Weekend – A Gift From God

I think we can all agree that we would love to  all work a little less and play a little more. Life is so short and unpredictable. Labor Day Weekend has been celebrated for years now at Mercis’ family home, hosted by her mom Nina and dad Andy. Long ago we were a large and mighty group sadly through the years we have lost some loved ones. Happily we have also added new young faces. I was not sure how my mom would do spending the afternoon out. We told her when she got tired we would take her home. But she was happy  happy to be with everyone and we stayed until the end. It is a blessing to  gather together and celebrate a day in a life. Labor Day. A bittersweet day letting us know summer is coming to an end.  We were supposed to meet on Sunday, but due to the rain we meet on Monday afternoon which turned out to be a beautiful day. We started early because school started the next day for the grandchildren and most of us had to get up for work on Tuesday.

We enjoyed  delicious food and some Bloody Marys served up in copper cups designed for Moscow Mules but we were among friends and so we let our hair down. No formalities allowed.  And look who turned 65 this year Uncle Jimmy!!

There are some people in life that make you smile a little bigger, laugh a little louder and live a little better.  Never let them go.

Thank goodness for birthdays, natures way to tell us to keep eating cake. And can I say how  happy I was they picked an ice cream cake!!!  Here is  Christian helping Uncle Jimmy make a wish. We will miss summer and as the leaves change colors, we are getting ready to welcome autumn.

and people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of  their Labor for these are gifts from God. Ecclesiastes 3:13 Happy Labor Day!

The God Shaped Brain by Timothy R Jennings, MD #BOOKWORM

God is LOVE and when we let God into our lives a transformation of the heart begins.  However, did you know that when you learn more about God your brain is also changed.

The God Shaped Brain is a book that draws powerful connections between beliefs and brain health.  This book explains how religious beliefs can affect more than our spiritual health and our view on God can actually lead to mental and physical change.

The author Timothy R. Jennings, M.D. is a board-certified Christian psychiatrist, master psychopharmacology, international speaker…Dr. Jennings obtained his M.D. Degree in 1990 from University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis, TN. Dr. Jennings is President and Founder of Come and Reason Ministries and has served as President of the Southern Psychiatric Association and Tennessee Psychiatric Association.  In his book, The God Changed Brain, he explains how changing your view of God transforms your life.

In The God Shaped Brain, Dr. Jennings synthesizes theology with brain science to reveal a wealth of facts, such as:

  • Beliefs and choices actually changed brain circuitry and alter gene expression.
  • Unhealthy God concepts (such as worshiping a punitive or authoritative God) activate inflammatory pathways and contribute to physical and mental illness.
  • Even if unhealthy concepts of God are practiced only in the imagination, it has damaging effects on the brain.
  • changing an unhealthy God concept to a healthy on can positively impact the mind, body and relationships.

The brain is an organ that is constantly developed and in his book, Jennings illustrates in easy to follow language how the brain adapts based on the choices a person makes, the beliefs that are held and the God that is worshiped.

This book, The God Shaped Brain, makes a compelling, evidenced based case for a God of love and His methods of love that is easy to understand and gives us a practical level as to why it is so important to live in harmony with God and his design for our life.
