Anisette Toast

anisettetoast

My mom plays poker every Friday night with the ladies. They each bring something good to share each week. Helen makes these great Anisette Toasts.   I am so happy on a Saturday morning if my mom  brought some home for me (like today). 🙂 Here is the recipe

Anisette Toast

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup softened butter
1 cup white sugar
3 eggs
4 teaspoons anise extract

Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl; set aside. Grease 2 baking sheets.

Beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer in a large bowl until fluffy. Beat in one egg until completely incorporated, then another. Beat in the last egg along with the anise extract. Mix in the flour until just incorporated. Divide the dough onto the prepared baking sheets. Form each portion into a 12-inch long log, 1/2-inch thick.

Bake in the preheated oven until golden and firm to the touch, 20 to 25 minutes. Remove from the oven, and allow to cool 5 minutes. Cut into 3/4-inch thick slices using a serrated knife, and place cut-side-down onto the baking sheets. Return to the oven, and bake 5 to 10 minutes until the bottoms turn golden brown. Turn the cookies over, and continue baking until golden brown on the other side, 5 to 10 minutes more. Cool completely on a wire rack before serving.

Serve with fresh coffee. Good morning, Thank you Helen!!!

Day At The Pool and Joe’s Crab Shack = Summer Fun

pool76144

Over the July 4th weekend, I went to the pool with my daughter and her family. The sky was clear blue, a pleasant breeze and cool water.  This was Calebs’ first dip in the kiddie pool. He really liked it. Splashing and laughing and once in a while bending down to far and dipping his face and hat in the water.

After all that fun in the water and sun, it was time to get something to eat. My son in law Bill suggested Joe’s Crab Shack. Sounded good to me.  So we packed it all up a headed over.

Liam said to me “Grandma, I can’t stop looking up there” Neither could I. So funny!!

He colored and did some puzzles waiting for his kids menu pizza and apple sauce.

Natalie was reading and did not talk to us. She wanted to stay at the pool. Not happy.

I got so many Coconut Shrimp, I took half of them home along with Liams’ apple sauce. Happy 🙂

Next thing we knew, the waiters and waitresses started dancing and put on a show. Really a fun family place. Caleb was very into it.

I simply love the summer and all the fun times that come with it.

Foody Friend Friday

foodyfriday

I took the day off and  Merci came by today.  We each have a facial appointment, so no make-up today (more on that later)  but first we went for coffee. It is such a beautiful day, we  walked up to 30th Avenue to  a favorite  bakery and shared a delicious berry tart.

My appointment was first, the session lasted about 30 minutes. Merci was next.  When we left the salon,  I was surprised to hear Merci say, “Let’s get something to eat, I’m hungry”.  Guess what was right next door? Basil Brick Oven Pizzeria. Talk about perfect timing. 🙂

We split a mixed green salad, with goat cheese, walnuts and pear. It was so good and so refreshing.  Then we shared a Margherita Pizza, love the oh so thin crust and fresh mozzarella and basil. We didn’t think we would finish it all, but we did.

We both agreed there should be more foody friend days like these. We made a promise to ourselves.

Birthdays What a Ball

My birthday was celebrated at my son’s house this year and we all enjoyed the day.

Now the grand kids always are amusing.  They never let the day go without reminding us that no matter what they are the center of it all.

Especially Mr. Christian!

However, Christian always starts off on the grouchy side.

get-attachment (99)

I am not sure why…but I tend to think its because he not sure how to deal with all the attention I, and others,  give him.

It is not very long before his gruff attitude  melts away.

And when he begins to show his loving side, watch out, because  he has a lot of love.

Even when the older children started to play volleyball and kept hitting the ball over Christian’s pleas of “Me Too, Me Too”. Christian kept his cool.  No tantrums, no screaming because the older “children” were volleying the ball over him, just screams of ,”ME TOO”.

Yes, my birthday did not end up to be about, ‘ME’, but I would not have had it any other way.
